What are Root Canals?

A root canal is a procedure that involves removing the pulp from an infected or broken tooth. Every tooth has a tiny pulp inside that is responsible for housing the blood supply and nerves. If the tooth becomes severely decayed or has cracked enough to expose the pulp, it’ll need to be removed via a root canal. Root canals are common procedures that help to save the overall structure of a tooth and prevent extraction.

Why would Root Canals be needed?

The most common reason for needing a root canal is because of severe tooth decay. Cavities that were ignored and never filled or undetected decay can all contribute to the pulp becoming infected. Once infected, the pulp needs to be removed to prevent further problems from developing. Another reason your child might need a root canal is because a tooth has cracked or broken enough to expose the pulp.

Who is a candidate for Root Canals?

With the help of an exam and x-rays, we can determine if your child will need a root canal. It’s important to have the procedure done soon to prevent future problems from occurring. The most common signs for needing a root canal are severe tooth-specific pain and sensitivity to both hot and cold temperature extremes. However, an exam is necessary to further identify the problem before simply performing a root canal.

What happens during a typical Root Canal?

The first step is to administer an anesthetic to numb the area. Once this is done, we will remove the decay from the tooth and use special tools to take out the pulp. The canals of the roots are cleaned thoroughly and any remaining pulp matter is taken out. The roots are then filled with a special medicated material and the hole in the tooth is filled with simple composite resin filling material. It’s important to note that most teeth that have had a root canal will need a crown shortly after the procedure because the tooth is more susceptible to breaking.
